We live in a world which changes so dramatically, so quickly that we barely have time to take stock of things. In our own life, one minute everything can be going so well and then within a flash, things can fall apart... and then again they can turn around just as fast.
Our modern technology throws us into the future so fast with so many choices that we are almost strangled by options and the possibility of not picking the right option. And there rarely is THE right option, or career, or person. Only A right option, A right career, A right person.
Life is funny because it offers us whatever we want if we have the sense to take it but it doesn't always let us keep it. So we must come to accept that 'life changes' is that inevitable truth. It is the truth that defines our existence and once we accept it then we can learn to be free.
This freedom comes at a cost because it means that we know that things are never going to be 'perfect'. Instead, they are going to get better and get worse. What we have the control over is how we get in response to these events.
Many people allow the world to determine their fate. They hide away and fold themselves inside of the excuses which trap them and limit them. They die complaining about how things are. The hero never does. The hero fights to make the world a better place. The hero stands facing the world and declares things will be different.
We don't think of ourselves as being heroes just for holding an attitude and doing a few things but that is who we are when we begin to make it count. We all get choices so what we do with those choices, what we decide will determine our own experience of life. So I believe that we can be heroes by doing what heroes would do.
They save people and to start saving people, we must save ourselves. We must save ourselves from negativity. We must save ourselves from giving up and giving in. We must save ourselves from excuses and limits. Once we are saved. Once we look at the future with optimism and a smile then we can look at saving others.
And how do we then save others? We open ourselves to them. We accept their failings. We accept some people will be nice and some people will be nasty.
We accept sometimes you will be let down by your best friends and sometimes your heart will be broken. Sometimes you will be blamed for things that you're not to blame for and sometimes people will take out their own problems on you. But there are other times that you will be somewhere with someone doing something and you will get a realization... that you are really connecting with someone. And that connection is special between you and them, for that moment, at that time. And you will know that nobody can ever take that away from you.
You will understand that the human connection is something which is so important and it's ok to let yourself fail and be rejected and embarrassed as long as you keep striving for that connection. It is not necessarily a romantic one. It could be a fascinating chat with a stranger you never see again. And when you have it, you feel a sense of love for people. You know what it's like to be alive.
Maybe, then it reminds you that we are all in the same bowl of earth and when we look at our fellow humans, we can override the fear and jealousy and ignorance and anger we have towards others and no matter what color, religion, attitudes or beliefs of a person we can be free enough to let ourselves love them. Sometimes it's harder than others but when we do we are liberated from our own insecurities and we realise we are not alone.
If we can make this decision and choose to change how we relate to others then we can start something which might just keep going. It's called Hope.
The End of our Ignorance is the Beginning of our Wisdom. The End of our Hate is the Beginning of our Love. The End of our Misery is the Beginning of our Freedom. We can end things. We can begin things. So, why not? That's what heroes do. |
