THE QUALITY OF HEROISM PDF Print E-mail
This month I want to talk about a different way of looking at heroism. Heroism is usually associated with courageous individuals who sacrifice themselves for the greater good. Often they give up their own lives so that other people can live. In this definition I wanna look at the very same commitment with one crucial difference. This is not about saving others. It's is about saving yourself.  This is also about doing so for the greater good. Usually, we don’t think of ourselves like we think about others. We give ourselves a hard time and abuse ourselves racking ourself with guilt, anxiety and miserable feelings. We would never treat others the way we treat ourselves. What we fail to understand time and time again is that by treating ourselves badly, we are treating everyone in our lives badly. The worse we treat ourselves, the worse we will feel. The worse we feel, the worse we will be to hang around with. The worse we are to hang around with, the worse others feel when they are around us.

So, it is vital to change the way you treat yourself, talk to yourself, think about yourself. Heroism in this case is just as heroic. You see, we all know for certain that we get this one life to make a difference. Some people make a big difference and some make a small difference. But we can all make things better. Some lives get thrown more challenges that others. Why is this? Well we don’t know although many people have differeing theories. What we do know is that the bigger the challenges the more a person can find out what they are made of deep down.

This we call the measure of a person. This we call a persons character. This we call the persons make up. When you are facing the biggest challenges. How do you respond? Do you run? Do you hide? DO you seek out excuses and wallow in them? Do you crawl behiond self pity? Do you lie down and give up? Or Do you fight?

Do you fight to overcome the challenges? Do you summer up all your strength and push up once more? Do you refuse to let circumstances rule you? Do you defy the spell of depression or stress? Do you move forward through and through regardless, come what may, towards creating the kind of life you want, you need, you deserve? What do you do?

You see, this kind of heroism is a choice. And make no mistake, it is heroism. You are saving somebody very special in this world. Someone who was brought up, survived though times and is still breathing, and whose heart is still beating. The cowards will give in. But once in a while we get an opportunity to be heroes. We all have this opportunity.

Being a hero means maintaining hope no matter how dark the times. It means letting your heart pull you through just when you feel like you can’t take it any more. It means never stopping and vowing, committing, promising to yourself that you will turn your life around.

And then, some time from now, you will get to look back on your life. You will get to look back and see how you came through, see how you fared, see who you were when challenges and the knocks came calling. Then you will know what it feels like to be filled with self pride.
