This month I want to talk about making Life Decisions and Choices. We live in a world which is radically different to how things were 50-100 years ago. We have so much more than we could have ever imagined even back then... but fundamentally our vastly improved lives have made us more miserable than ever. This paradox comes down to the greatest strength and weakness of human kind... the dignity of choice.
Years ago, the length of time spent in a particular career was very often life. As we continue to move into the future, this has changed dramatically. Nowadays, to be in the same career all a persons life is quickly becoming unheard of. People change careers and jobs at the drop of a hat and there is emphasis on all the different choices and options out there.
We our increasing ability to take on more information and learn about everything we want from all corners of the globe we have so many people to date, so many jobs to take, so many places to go, so many things to do. It is wonderful and yet is makes us more unhappy than ever.
'The grass is always greener' concept crually puts us in a position where most find it difficult to ever be happy. Many years ago, people accepted their 'lot' because it was all they ever knew. Nowadays, we struggle to do so, because we are constantly reminded of all the other available choices out there dangling in front our own very faces. We are constantly urged to have choosers remorse!!
So, how do we deal with this effectively? What is the solution? Many people that we get on courses such as our life enhancement are looking to find out what they want to do with their lives. They are victims of choice also. They are seduced by so many options and the promise of freedom and perfection out there. The truth is that there will never be perfection but there can be freedom and this is how.
The trick is to dwell upon what choices and decisions are supposed to be: mental movements which take you forward in your life. If you can realise that your attitude will determine how forward or backward you are... then you will understand how to make the best decisions.
The best decisions are about taking all the available information it is reasonable for you to consider and then making a choice based upon ecology. In other words, ensuring that your decision is the best possible decision for you and the people in your life right out into the future. That you are thinking ahead towards your own, and the people in your lives happiness. That your decision is good and moral.
The best decisions and choices are also about not regretting the past and blaming yourself for mistakes. Accepting responsibility is the best way to go, making sure that you are prepared to do whatever you need to in order to live with the choices you give yourself.
When you make a choice, choose to make that choice a good choice by standing by it and making it work as best you can. Practise making decisions from small to big ones as the more decisive you can learn to be, the more effective you will learn to be.
Decide and decide often and make yourself aware that you are, indeed, choosing something, making a decision yourself. That way, you tell your brain that you are deciding how to live in this world and challenges are not thrust upon you but you have control and power.
Lastly, remember that we can't have everything that we want, but we can have almost anything. Learn what are the most important things to you... your values and they will provide you with the secret towards living a happier life.
Then, be happy that you are choosing the best things... making the best decisions and when all the other options come along you can smile and say 'Maybe in another life' and realise that the same options that seem so appealing do so only in your imagination and in reality, everything has it's advantages and disadvantages.
